The SOLO Program at threewalls aims to support local and regional artists with a solo exhibition and stipend. Determined through an open application process, the SOLO program is juried by an annual committee of local artists, curators, writers and historians, electing work for exhibition based on variety of criteria, that includes: work that is less commercially viable and could benefit from exhibition support at a NFP institution; work that represents a significant growth, change or risk in an artist's practice; work that is challenging in terms of content, media or presentation; as well as looking to support ideas or practices that are timely, significant or provocative.
SOLO exhibitions are accompanied by free-publications with an essay by a creative writer, art historian, critic or theorist. Please visit our exhibition archives to download PDF essays for the 2010/11/12 exhibitions.
threewalls accepts applications from local and regional artists for solo exhibitions through the 'SOLO' program. Artists working in all media and any stage in their career are encouraged to apply. The application fee for the program is $20.00.
With each review we receive an increase in the number of exceptional proposals, a reflection of the strength of visual arts practice in Chicago. We encourage all applicants to reapply for future deadlines as the proposal review is not only an opportunity to apply for an exhibition, but an excellent opportunity to have your work viewed by a number of members of the visual arts community. Artists not chosen for the SOLO program may be contacted for other projects, including exhibition in the project room, group exhibitions or participation in projects outside of threewalls.
WHO: Local and regional artists, at any career stage, who are not currently enrolled as students at the time of application, nor will be students during their proposed exhibition. Regional artists are defined as artists living and working in Illinois, NW Indiana, SW Michigan and SE Wisconsin.
WHAT: A six-week SOLO exhibition at threewalls' gallery. Artists selected for the main space receive a $750 materials stipend, exhibition support and bifold publication; artists selected for the project room receive a $300 stipend and exhibition support. 4 artists per space are selected per programming year for a total of 8 artists.
WHEN: Deadline is August 31st of each year. Online application will be open June 10th.
We try to notify applicants in a timely manner. The committee meets between November and January, all artists will be notified within 45 days of the committee meeting, successful applicants will be notified by email.
**please note: we currently do not have the floorplan for the exhibition space available for planning as the gallery is considering relocation for fall 2013.
We are not currently accepting new residency applications at this time.
