threewalls welcomed a group of national and international artists to Chicago in the summer of 2009 with their first thematic residency, Women in Performance. Curated from threewalls open application process, residents Susan Lee-Chun (Miami), Kang-hyun Ahn (Seoul via Chicago), Gitte Bog (Denmark via Mexico City) and collaborative CamLab (Jemima Wyman, Brisbane and Anna Mayer, Los Angeles) shared performance and interactive or participatory methodologies in creating work that addresses identity, perception and ideas of authenticity through work that engages a critique of stable or certain characterization or recognition. Through multidisciplinary means, their work mutually employs humor, the senses and the absurd to capture their audience’s attention and participation.
The summer residents lived and worked in Chicago for 10 weeks. Acting as facilitator,threewalls placed these artists ‘in residence’ in Chicago at three arts organizations: Bog and Lee-Chun at The Hyde Park Art Center, CamLab at the Co-Prosperity Sphere and Ahn at threewalls . Along with living and working in the city and exhibiting at threewalls, the residents hosted workshops with Chicago Public School’s art teachers, attend OxBow in Saugatuk, Michigan and participated in threewalls annual summer symposium.
No Other One Is brought their work together for a summer-long group show to introduce their work to audiences in the region while they complete research and projects during their stay. The exhibition included live and on-going participatory performances and projects, while the residents continue to create work at-large throughout Chicago over the course of their stay.
CamLab is the result of Wyman and Mayer’s combined investments in the phenomenon of scopophilia and in destabilizing the notion of a singular authoritative subjectivity. These investments manifest in optically-charge and ribald projects that have more recently incorporated additional bodies to participate in structured experiences of physical intimacy. They have exhibited as a collaborative in group exhibitions in Poland, the Czech Republic, Glasgow and California as well as solo exhibitions and live performances at Gallery 40000 in Chicago, The Block in Brisbane, Australia and Ladyfest in Copenhagen. CamLab was nominated for a New Museum Altoids Award in 2008.
Ahn's collecting and archiving goes beyond what exists into the often intangible extinct - old social customs, extinct organisms, songs not longer sung. She visualizes this collected information through object-making, collage, video installation and performance, increasingly interested in the space where art encounters spectators and work encounters space, and the manner in which the encounter occurs. Ahn has participated in exhibitions and performances in the UK, Korea and Germany, including Seoul Museum of Art; Alternative Space Miccle, Seoul; Sussex Barn Gallery, Chichester, UK and The Place Gallery, London.
Lee-Chun's interests lie in the relationship between identity and place and are manifest in a body of work that incorporates participatory performances, video, and installations. Fascinated by humor and its capability to grab the attention of a wider audience, Lee-Chun employs a tongue in cheek style to the work, under which lies a deeper intensity that explores notions of race and identity politics. Lee-Chun has exhibited solo in El Salvador at the Museo de Arte de El Salvador, the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art in Colorado and in group exhibitions at Arthouse Texas, Austin; Twenty Twenty Projects, Miami; Musuem of Contemporary Art, North Miami and the Herning Kunstmuseum in Herning, Denmark. She is currently represented by David Castillo Gallery in Miami, Florida.
Gitte Bog is interested in the poetic possibilities in everyday materials, activities and places and the history and cultural differences therein. Using participatory strategies as a platform for dialog, Bog learns traditional folk dances, recipes and texts and uses these as a medium to engage in dialog about immigration, translation and the cultural melting pot. Bog has exhibited around the globe including The Centre for Drawing, London; Metro Pino Suarez, Mexico City and Cali Contemporaneo, Columbia. She has completed commissions for Beacon Art Projects, Lincolnshire and Space Triangle, London.
