When the words get messed up and the dates transposed, meaning is amended. As this new transposition is passed along, parts are jumbled together, the picture colored, and the edges worn. Something new, half-formed, is born; cobbled together from the errors and forgetting and embellished with subjective fancy. Featuring Vox Populi artists, Andrew Suggs, Anna Neighbor,Corey Antis, Gabriel Boyce, James Johnson, Linda Yun, Leah Ballis and Matthew Suib, Merge or Fade misremembers: edits parts, leaves a trace, shape-shifts and hovers. What is told is only in halves, but the haunting-absent is never-the-less open, beckoning you to fill in the blanks, make corrections or let your memories mingle.
Merge or Fade is a selection of work from Vox Populi’s membership, curated by ThreeWalls Director and Curator, Shannon Stratton. A part of an exchange project, Vox Populi will host the exhibition Bellwether, work by 11 Chicago or formerly Chicago-based artists, in July.
Founded in 1988, Vox Populi is a not-for-profit artist collective that supports the work of emerging artists with monthly exhibitions, gallery talks, performances and lectures. For nearly 20 years, Vox has played a unique role in cultural life of Philadelphia by bringing cutting-edge contemporary art and diverse programming to the attention of its audience. With a rotating membership and commitment to working collectively, the gallery remains true to its roots, providing a supportive environment for experimentation, risk and experience in building and launching a professional careers in the visual arts.
