threewallsRESIDENCIES

self-directed and fellowship opportunities

threewalls offers opportunities to artists to bring their research to Chicago and take advantage of the unique resources offered in the Midwest. We offer several opportunities to come and live and work in the city: self-directed residencies, collaborations with other local organizations/residencies both in and outside of Chicago, and fellowship opportunities.

threewalls has an apartment space located within the gallery. This includes a private lockable bedroom with adjacent office/studio, a shared lounge or extended studio space, a shared kitchen, two bathrooms/showers and a workshop located behind the exhibition space and office. Artists who apply as residents either live and work at this space or in partner institutions depending on each applicant's proposal.

self-directed residencies

Artists can apply to come and live and work in Chicago to do research or projects that they have coordinated. Rent for the apartment is $200.00 per week. threewalls connects visiting self-directed artists to others working in the community during their stay and with any other resources the artists may require. Self-directed residents are welcome from all fields, and are invited to propose public programs during their stay.

fellowship opportunities

threewalls will work on one to two long-term projects per year selected from the residency applicants. These projects are supported through free studio and living space in Chicago as well as a personal stipend and production support. threewalls is looking to support projects that are specifically interested in Midwest* content, but not strictly Chicago. Projects can include film, intervention, public installation, publishing, recording, performance, curating or more traditional studio practices. A strong emphasis on research and collaboration is of interest, but not imperative.

collaborative residencies

threewalls is affiliated with a number of other instituitions, small and large, throughout the Chicago region. Annually we collaborate with these organizations on programming, including residencies curated by threewalls in collaboration with those affiliates.

Each summer we host one thematic session at Harold Arts in SE Ohio, curated by threewalls and Harold Arts that results in an exhibition, publication or other public program. Deadline is May of each year. Please watch this page and our monthly newsletter for more information on these opportunities.

applying

All applicants should fill out and submit the general inquiry application, specifying a range of dates for being in residency. Artists who have major proposals for fellowship should indicate this on the application and submit the additional materials required. Special collaborative residencies will have unique application processes and deadlines that will be announced as they become available.

deadlines

Applications to the general residencies are twice a year: August 31st and March 1st. Deadline to the threewalls/Harold Arts Ohio session is in May.

Self-directed residencies will be scheduled as quickly as possible for selected applicants. Due to the long-term nature of the fellowship projects, those opportunities will be scheduled further in advance after an initial interview with the finalists. Deadlines for special collaborative residencies will be announced here and through our newsletter as they come available.

fees

threewalls charges application fees for their programs. These fees help support the organization: facilities, programs, artist stipends, publications etc.

Self-directed residencies are $20, Fellowship residencies are $30 (includes consideration for self-directed program).

Self-directed residencies are $200.00 per week and include access to and use of the facilities at threewalls. Selected applicants will have their $20 application fee put towards this cost.

Collaborative residencies will or will not have application fees in accordance with the affiliated organizations.
